Prosthetics

When you think of prosthetics you probably don’t think about dentistry, but in fact, these things do go together. A dental prosthetic is often recommended to help reconstruct your mouth after serious defects have affected the health, function and appearance of your smile. Whether you are faced with damaged or missing teeth, our Chicago dentist, Dr. Dean Sana, can help restore your smile, thanks to dental prosthetics.

Dentures

One of the most common dental prosthetics that you probably already know a bit about is dentures. Dentures consist of a foundation that is designed to look similar to the gums. Out of these artificial gums sit on your false teeth, which will take the place of your missing teeth. There are different types of dentures from which to choose but the two common types are partial and full. As you can imagine from the names alone, partial dentures will be used if you are dealing with tooth loss but still have some healthy natural teeth left. Full dentures, also referred to as complete dentures, will be recommended if you are dealing with all of your teeth.

Each set of dentures is custom made to fit your mouth. Before you can get dentures, impressions will need to be taken. These molds of your mouth will help the lab to create a restoration that provides a perfect fit. Partial dentures are held in place through clasps, which are often attached to neighboring teeth to support it. Full dentures stay on by suction; however, you may also choose to use adhesives to keep your dentures in place.

Dentures are a quick, easy and inexpensive way to restore your smile without having to undergo surgery. Of course, dentures aren’t designed to last forever and will need to be readjusted and also replaced every few years.

Dental Implants

For otherwise healthy individuals who are faced with tooth loss, another dental prosthetic option is a dental implant. Implants are surgically embedded into the jawbone. Since the implant is made from a biocompatible metal, the body will not reject the implant.

Over time the implant and bone fuse together so that there is now a lifelong structure from which to support a dental crown. Multiple dental implants can also be placed throughout the jawbone to support multiple teeth. Implants can be used to stabilize dentures and keep them from moving or shifting around in your mouth.

Implants are a long-term restoration that can last the rest of your life, if cared for properly. They do require surgery and the length of treatment is extensive but you’ll enjoy your new tooth possibly for the rest of your life.
